We received this note from a reputable scale manufacturer this week and thought we would post the information.

There are several $100 range counting scales currently in the market place, typically these products are for sale on material handling company websites or auction sites. The problem is their AD is only 10 bit. This is a less than a $1 component used only in kitchen and bathroom scales. It is like selling a $10 kitchen scale and put counting software on it with a bigger casing and have the display showing 30,000 divisions and sell for $100. No wonder why this is SO CHEAP. Good for counting apples and oranges only.

This is how to test. Put something on the scale, assuming it reads 10.234 pounds.
60lb / 30,000 division = 0.002 lb

Now slowly put very small piece of paper (one at a time) on the scale and see if the weight or count can go up by 1 division, that is the next increment should show 10.236 pounds. If it doesn’t then the scale is no good because the display is not 30,000 division. The cheaper scales with low AD will likely show a large jump like 10:234 lb and then next jump will be 10.240. It is the software making the scale to visually display in 30,000 divisions.

This is like a $10 330 lb x 0.2 lb (1650 d) bathroom scale, put a counting software and expand the display to 330 lb x 0.01 lb (33,000 division) and call this a counting scale. Internally it is still a $10 scale, not a $100 scale. Yes, bathroom scales use a 10 bit processor, it is a part of the microchip and without AD.

Counterpart interfaces with most scale bases, balances, scanners, label printers, and text printers, regardless the manufacturer. Built in Ethernet can gather and transmit scale data to most software. Rice Lake offers a choice of two Counterpart consoles, dual scale or single scale. Both can be connected to virtually any analog scale or serial scale input, to count a full range of parts, from smallest to largest. Counterpart is loaded with user-friendly features designed to help operators produce perfect results by simply following the keys: zero, tare, sample, and count.

The display allows operators to simultaneously view weight, piece weight, description and quantity simultaneously. The ten-piece default sample setting and accuracy enhancement features release operators from counting out large samples. Operators can choose display modes, weight/1000 or average piece weight (APW), and work in the mode that’s most familiar. While the Counterpart has infinite power to handle the most complex operations, most counting tasks will be accomplished with a simple touch of a button.

Below is an overview on how to use the B130 counting scale for basic counting of parts.

Counting by Sampling
Follow these steps to count items using the sampling method. For count accuracy all items should be uniform in weight. Errors in count will occur if
parts vary in weight.

1. Turn the scale on and zero the display, if necessary, using the Zero key. Be sure the scale is displaying weight in your preferred unit of measure. Change it
using the Units key, if necessary.
2. Place a known number of objects on the scale. This is the sample weight the scale will use to calculate a piece weight… Weight of the items is displayed in the WEIGHT window.
3. Key in the number of objects you placed on the scale… SPL.PCS is displayed in the PIECE WEIGHT window and the number you keyed in is displayed in the COUNT window.
4. Press the Enter key to accept the keyed in number. (If you make an error in keying in the number, press the Clear key to clear the count in the COUNT
window and re-key the correct number.)… The scale calculates the weight of each piece (the piece weight) and displays the count in the COUNT window.
5. Place the items to be counted on the scale… The total weight, piece weight and count of the items will be shown in the three display windows respectively.
6. Remove the items from the scale and repeat steps 5 and 6 to count items of the same piece weight.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 to count items of a different piece weight. Counting can also be done while using a tare. After you have set the piece weight
(step 4), place the item to be tared on the scale, press the Tare key and continue with counting as described in step 5.

Note: Piece weight is displayed in grams/decimal grams or LB/decimal pounds.

Note: The original piece weight will be held in memory until a new piece weight has been determined. Turn the scale off, then on to return to normal weighing mode.

Counting by Entering a Known Piece Weight
You can enter a known piece weight and begin counting without sampling. This can also be used with the tare function active. After you have set the piece weight, place the item to be tared on the scale, press the Tare key and continue with counting as described below.

Follow these steps:
1. Turn the scale on and zero the display, if necessary, using the Zero key. Be sure the scale is displaying weight in your preferred unit of measure. Change it using the Units key, if necessary.
2. Press the Pcwt key… PC.t is displayed in the COUNT window and zeroes are displayed in the WEIGHT and PIECE WEIGHT windows.
3. There is a decimal point already in the PIECE WEIGHT window. Key in the known piece weight, in decimal pound or grams, using the numeric keypad so that the piece weight in the PIECE WEIGHT window is correct, then press the Enter key to accept this piece weight. (If you make an error in keying in the number, press the Clear key to clear the number and re-key the correct number.)
The counting mode activates using the entered piece weight.
4. Place the items to be counted on the scale… The total weight, piece weight and count of the items will be shown in the three display windows respectively.
5. Remove the items from the scale and repeat steps 4 and 5 to count items of the same piece weight.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 to count items of a different piece weight. Counting can also be done while using a tare. After you have set the piece weight (step 3), place the item to be tared on the scale, press the Tare key and continue with counting as described in step 4.

Sometimes customers know very little about actual counting on a counting scale. Below is an excerpt from the PC905 counting scale manual that mentions the basic counting function of the counting scale. Counting consists of two major steps; entering a piece weight and adding the items to be counted. You enter the piece weight in one of these ways:

• key in a known piece weight
• bulk sampling or dribble sampling (bulk is the default method)
• reverse sampling, method 1 or method 2 (method 1 is default). This can be used if either bulk or dribble is enabled.

These are fully explained in their respective sections below along with step by step instructions for counting using these methods. Sampling methods were set up before you received your scale but they can be changed. Once a piece weight is established, it remains active until another piece weight is manually entered, automatically calculated by a sampling process, or the piece weight is cleared by pressing CLR/ and then the PIECE WEIGHT key.

General Counting Information
If the COUNT annunciator is lit, numbers on the display show the number of pieces on the scale. If the WEIGHT annunciator is lit, the display shows the weight of the items on the scale. Press the COUNT/WEIGHT key to switch between these two. If there is no piece weight, the scale will not go into count mode when you press the COUNT/WEIGHT key. After counting items, remove them and the display should return to zero. If not, press the ZERO key. The STABLE annunciator is controlled by the weight division setting and STABLE setting in SCALE menu and does not necessarily reflect the stability in the count mode. You can key in a known tare weight on the numeric keypad and press the TARE key. This enters the tare weight and the TARE indicator lights to remind you that there is an active tare weight.

When you press the SAMPLE key the scale performs an auto-zero or tare. A counting scale needs a minimum amount of weight to calculate counts with accuracy. Avery Weigh-Tronix recommends the sample weight be a minimum of 0.04% of scale capacity for 99% accuracy.
